Shell mandalas: math and art September 08 2014

These shell mandalas are a great lesson in math and art.shell mandalas for kids :: math and art

Shell mandalas

What to do with a bucket of shells? One art idea we return to often is making mandalas, but we’d never made one from shells

before. Time to give it a   try!

       things to do with shells

We started by sorting out our shells into groups, matching by shape, colour and sizes. This is a good opportunity to look at the fine details on the shells, and to talk about which creatures used to live in them.sorting shells

Then all you need for a mandala is to make a start and let the patterns flow. A circle is a good shape to begin with…how to make a mandala

and you can build it up from there, using any colours, patterns and shapes that suggest themselves to you.

Combing math and art

As you’re making your mandala your brain is working with lots of mathematic ideas. You are:

:: counting, and making repeating patterns

:: comparing sizes and finding sizes that match

:: mathing things that are bigger than or smaller than the shell you are placing

:: working with fractions as you place matching shells a quarter and half way around your circle

:: playing with a radius and circumference, even before you might know their namesshell mandala art

The finished shell mandala can be as big and detailed as you like.mandalas for kids using shells

It might have a flower shape, or be made of circles, or any design you want.circle mandala art

But beware – mandala-making is catching! You might find yourself making mini mandalas on the kitchen table, using tiny stones

you’ve hidden in your pocket.

Shell Candles- How To. March 11 2014

The shells that the ocean cast at your feet this summer -- the ones you so fastidiously collected -- make lovely remembrances of the season with candles formed inside them. Deep shells like scallops, clams, and quahogs work best and burn longest.

The shells that the ocean cast at your feet this summer -- the ones you so fastidiously collected -- make lovely remembrances of the season with candles formed inside them. Deep shells like scallops, clams, and quahogs work best and burn longest.

First, clean the shells in a weak solution of bleach and water, and let dry. Melt paraffin wax or existing candles in the top of a double boiler (use one with a lip, if possible; it will be easier to pour from). We mixed the melted wax of pink, mauve, and yellow candles to create coral tones that complement our shells.

If a shell has a tendency to wobble, stabilize it by resting it on top of a cup. Cut the wicking to 2 to 3 inches, and attach it to a metal wick holder; set aside.

Pour the melted wax into the shell, then place the wick and holder in the bottom of the shell, being careful not to burn your fingers. If wick droops, trim slightly. Let cool until hardened, about 30 minutes.

And be careful: The top layer of the wax hardens first, but the melted wax underneath will spill out if the candle is moved before it has had a chance to cool completely.

The Mysterious Shell Grotto of Kent February 18 2014

The Shell Grotto is a unique 70-foot underground winding passageway in Margate, Kent, painstakingly decorated with around 4,6 million seashells. This English tourist attraction is as beautiful as it is mysterious, as no one seems to know who created it and why.

The story goes that the Shell Grotto was discovered in 1835, when local James Newlove lowered his son Joshua into a hole in the ground that appeared while they were digging a duck pond. When the boy came back out, he told his father about this wondrous underground tunnel covered entirely in seashell mosaics. As soon as he laid eyes on the accidental discovery, Newlove immediately saw its commercial potential. He installed gas lamps to illuminate the ornate passageway and three years later he opened the grotto to the public. The opening came as a big surprise to the inhabitants of Margate, as the place had never bee marked on any maps, and nobody knew about its existence. As soon as the first paying visitors walked into the shell–covered underground tunnel, the debate regarding its origins began. For every person who believed it was an ancient temple, there seemed to be another one convinced it was actually the secret meeting place of a secret sect. Everyone saw something different in the mosaic patterns, from altars to gods and goddesses or trees of life. But despite the multiple theories going around, no one has been able to solve the mystery of the Shell Grotto.

There approximately 4.6 million shells (cockles, whelks, mussels and oysters) glued to the walls and ceiling of Kent’s mysterious passageway using fish-based mortar. The Victorian lighting installation set up by James Newlove damaged some of the decorations throughout the years, and the so-called Altar Chamber was destroyed by a bomb during World War 2, and had to be rebuilt. Today, shell mosaics once again cover the entire 2000 square feet of the grotto and a team of conservationists is making sure this unique tourist attraction will be around to amaze and astonish visitors for years to come.

Home Decoration February 18 2014

With a little imagination and skill you can come up with a beautiful  nautical decors. Invite the beach and the sea in your home!

In Martha's Steward blog , we find out some clever uses and purposes around the home.

A wide-mouthed, spiral nautilus shell can double as a pearlescent vase for bedroom bouquets.

Make waves with an arrangement set in a seashell. The trick is to fit a piece of floral foam inside the shell. Then you can tuck in stems, and they'll stay put. Here, variegated hosta leaves and frilly ferns cup a green-and-white cluster of Queen Anne's lace. Buy one at our crafts store.

Shell Salt-and-Pepper Dishes

Four clam or scallop shells make a summery set of salt-and-pepper dishes. First, run four shells per set through a dishwasher, secured in the silverware caddy. For the base, turn two shells topside up, and hot-glue them together at the hinge. Glue together the other two shells; then lay them face up and crosswise over the base, and glue.

We love all of them. Find out more at http://www.marthastewart.com/
